NATIONAL STUDENTS’ UNION OF INDIA
DUSU-2010
MANIFESTO
Indira Gandhi
The students of Delhi University have over the last one decade consistently placed their trust on the NSUI, enabling our candidates to win with record margins in most years. This result is not only reflective of the students’ faith in the abilities of the NSUI led DUSU to deliver on its promises, it also reflects a general satisfaction with the pro-student, pro-youth policies of the Congress led UPA government at the Centre. In the last 7 years, the Manmohan Singh government has steadfastly adhered to its mission of focussing on the education sector – whether by setting up new IITs and IIM’s, new Central Universities in all states, increase in mid-day meal and Sarva Shikshya Abhiyan schemes, scholarships for single girl children, Rajiv Gandhi fellowships, and of course the historic Right to Education Act passed earlier this year, which provides compulsory education to all children below the age of 14 years old. This legislation will certainly go a long way in bringing down illiteracy rates and child labour, as children, especially from economically weak and rural backgrounds will be provided with incentives to allow them to continue and complete their education.
A number of candidates across political organisations were disqualified during the students’ union elections last year due to violations of the electoral code of conduct. This year, NSUI, has taken a step forward to ensure that candidates desirous of contesting the elections are chosen by the students themselves, rather than the leadership, as has traditionally been the case. Under the able watchmanship of FAME, an independent agency, members of the organisation from all the colleges have voted for the 4 contestants, thereby bringing about true democracy and once again charting a new course in history.
ISSUES FOR 2010-11
ADMISSIONS
Transparency in OBC admissions: Why is it that in spite of media reports about OBC seats being vacant in most colleges, these students are not able to secure admission? NSUI demands that OBC students have a separate registration process during admission time, and that all colleges give them the full quota of relaxation available to them from the first list itself.
SC, ST admissions: SC and ST students should have the freedom to decide on which college they wish to attend like all other students.
EXAMINATIONS AND ACADEMICS
Despite the fact that the internal assessment system has been in place for quite a few years now, students continue to complain about arbitrary moderation of their internal assessment marks at the university level. NSUI demands that such moderation be stopped immediately.
Declaration of results: All results of the university should be compulsorily declared before the start of the new term.
Final exam scripts should be made available to students, if asked for.
More short term and job oriented add on courses in all colleges.
More choice of foundation and application courses in the B.A. programme should be made available to students in the colleges.
Ramps should be compulsorily there in all colleges, not just at the entrance but also to facilitate movement towards higher floors.
Braille software to be made available in all colleges for blind students, with one computer solely dedicated for their use.
FELLOWSHIPS:
Fellowships for students hailing from the socially and economically deprived sections.
Special fellowships for girl students to encourage more girls to pursue higher education.
COMMITTEE AGAINST SEXUAL HARASSMENT:
One of the elected office bearers of DUSU should be an ex-officio member of the Committee against Sexual Harrassment of the University.
A full time counsellor should be appointed by the university to help victims of sexual harassment.
Speedy justice system in all cases of sexual harassment. In no case should the decision take more than a month from the date of complaint.
